Exfoliating Cleanser
Cleansers that exfoliate, also called "peels" are useful in that they help to clear away dead skin cells. They do this first by using an acid chemical called "alpha hydroxy"(glycolic acid). This acid has been shown to lift dead skin cells to the surface. Though not always necessary, many exfoliating face washes have "Scrubbing Beads" or crystals in them. These beads/crystals can be made of anything from plastics to vegetable husks. If you use an exfoliating face wash with scrubbing beads in it take care not to press down too hard as this can cause irritation and inflammation.
Acid peel cleansers also include chemical peels. These products literally peel off the outer layer of skin to reveal brand new baby skin. This technique can be effective in decreasing scar tissue from acne. These products should be used sparingly as they are harsh and repeated use can inflame the skin and cause irreparable damage.
